Types of Aluminum material used in Aircraft
Aluminum alloys are a preferred material on design chart on aerospace components and suitable for a wide range of aircraft components.
■ 2014
Strong and durable, the only weak point of this alloy is its poor resistance to corrosive elements. So 2014 is often used in the internal portions of aircraft rather than the external structure.
■ 2024
Mainly consisted of copper, 2024 is most commonly used in the construction of wings and fuselages due to high tension requirements of these components.
■ 5052
This alloy offers good flexibility and can be formed into a range of configurations.
■ 6061
6061 is one of the most commonly used alloys, it is often utilized in the wings and fuselages of airplane.
■ 7050
One of the most popular alloys in the aerospace industry, 7050 has a higher capacity for corrosion resistance than 7075, and is much more durable.
■ 7068
The best aluminum alloy utilized today, 7068 combines high strength and low mass.
■ 7075
Mainly composed of zinc, 7075 offers steel-like strength and is easily machined.
