How to choose the grade of stainless steel?
The selection and design of stainless steel products should consider the following:
1. Which material properties are required for product design.
2. Is there any existing inventory for the materials to avoid shortages?
3. The popularity of stainless steel number.
4. The ease of processing the product and whether it can be mass-produced.
The commonly used material grades for WAS SHENG are stainless steel 300 and 400 series. The following are some of the common grades. Please feel free to contact us if you have any manufacturing issues.
SUS 301
SUS 301 has a high carbon content with good ductility and weld ability. Its elasticity can be improved through mechanical processing and quenching. Furthermore, its wear resistance and elasticity strength are superior to SUS304. It is suitable for products such as springs, steel structures, wheel covers, and clips.
SUS 302
The material SUS302 has the same corrosion resistance as SUS304, but its carbon content is higher than SUS304, which makes it unsuitable for welding and use at high temperatures. After cold forging, its strength is improved but its ductility is slightly lower than that of SUS301. It is suitable for products such as small screws and bolts.
SUS 303 & SUS 303 Cu
By adding small amounts of sulfur and phosphorus, SUS303 can be machined more easily than SUS304. SUS 303 CU, on the other hand, contains a small amount of copper and both are collectively referred to as free-cutting stainless steel. The chips produced during cutting are smaller and less likely to stick to the tool, which can significantly reduce cutting time. They are widely used in lathes and milling machines. SUS303 is not magnetic but it may become weakly magnetic after processing and requires demagnetization. Its applications are diverse, such as machining parts like shafts, pins, and precision screws.
SUS 303F
SUS303F is a type of cutting stainless steel that includes a small amount of molybdenum to enhance its corrosion resistance, providing an additional option for components used in special working environments. It is easier to machine than SUS304 and the chips produced during cutting are smaller, less likely to stick to the tool, and can significantly reduce cutting time and costs. As a result, it is widely used in CNC and milling machines. SUS303F is non-magnetic, but it may become weakly magnetic after processing and requires solid solution treatment for demagnetization.
SUS 304
Stainless steel 304 is internationally recognized for its excellent corrosion resistance, heat resistance, oxidation resistance and strong mechanical properties, particularly at low temperatures. It is widely utilized in various forms, such as bars, sheets, and wires. However, due to the strip-like shape of the chips formed during cutting, they can easily become entangled in the cutting tool, making machining difficult. As a result, it is challenging to manufacture complex-shaped parts with deep hole processing. Stainless steel 304 is commonly used in the home appliance industry, automotive parts, cabinets, indoor piping, water heaters, boilers, bathtubs, medical devices, food industries, and marine components.
SUS 304L
SUS304L is a material with good weld ability, suitable for production processes such as bending and deep drawing. However, due to its poor thermal conductivity, it tends to concentrate heat at the cutting tool tip during machining, which can cause tool damage. Therefore, it is not suitable for cutting production.
SUS 304F
SUS304F is a material with unique machinability, which belongs to a special kind of 304 material. It is widely used for cutting and machining processes.
SUS 316
This widely used stainless steel is primarily applied in the food industry and surgical equipment, commonly known as medical-grade stainless steel. The difference with SUS304 is that molybdenum is added to obtain a special structure that provides corrosion resistance and SUS316 has better anti-rust properties. Due to its superior ability to resist chloride corrosion compared to 304, it is also used in the shipbuilding industry. This material is also used in environments susceptible to chemical corrosion, construction, food equipment, water valves, medical equipment, and fasteners in coastal areas.
SUS 316L
Material SUS316L is achieved by reducing the carbon content and increasing the molybdenum content of SUS316 to enhance the corrosion resistance and improve the strength for high-temperature applications, it is widely used in stamping parts.
SUS 316F
The SUS316F material is achieved by increasing the sulfur content on the basis of SUS316 to enhance the machinability, widely used in machining parts.
SUS 410
SUS410 is achieved by reducing the nickel and increasing the carbon content, it can be subjected to heat treatment after processing to obtain higher mechanical strength and toughness. It also has stronger corrosion resistance compared to steel. In the industry, it is commonly referred to as tool steel. The material is magnetic and suitable for cold forging and stamping.
SUS 410C
Increasing the carbon content on the basis of SUS410 can provide higher hardness after processing and heat treatment. It is commonly used in products such as drilling screw.
SUS 416
The most machinable type of 4 series stainless steel is commonly used for CNC machining processing. After processing and heat treatment, it can provide higher hardness. The material is magnetic and suitable for machining products that require CNC machining.
SUS 420
This material has high hardness and it exhibits excellent polishing and high mirror finishing effects, high corrosion resistance after heat treatment. It is suitable for manufacturing parts that can withstand high loads, abrasion resistance and corrosion in a corrosive medium.
SUS 430
This is the most corrosion-resistant type of 4 series stainless steel. Although its mechanical properties are slightly lower than SUS304 and it does not contain nickel, it is cheaper and easier to machine than SUS304. As a result, some stainless steel parts have been replaced by SUS 430. It is suitable for all kinds of machining processes. After processing and heat treatment, it can provide higher hardness. The material is magnetic.
SUS 430F
Sulfur is added to the basis of SUS430 to improve its machinability, making it suitable for lathe parts production.
